Our Guest Speaker is Rick Esselment who will give a lively and informative presentation on Septic Systems. There will be some technical information as well as  an overview of DIY information, best practices and practical advice for system owners preparing for a reinspection or just doing their own maintenance and due diligence.  Rick is the President and Founder of ESSE Canada, a family business providing inspection, maintenance programs, compliance reporting, sampling, design review and warranty services for onsite and communal wastewater treatment systems across Ontario.

Lake of Bays Association Board member, Wendy Gibson will provide an update and overview on the development proposal for Langmaid's Island.

Langmaid's Island development proposal UPDATE

The joint (District of Muskoka, Township of Lake of Bays, Town of Huntsville) Statutory public meeting regarding the development proposal for Langmaid's Island was held on Saturday June 2 at the Baysville Community Centre. The meeting was chaired by Township Mayor Bob Young and about 120 people attended.

The meeting began with informational staff reports from the planners of the three municipalities. Next up was Jim Dyment speaking for Langmaid's Island Corp. who outlined the planning process to date and emphasized that the plan was developed around the environment.

Thirty-four members of the public then spoke. Three speakers were supportive and thirty-one  expressed concerns about the development as proposed. Concerns included the pace of decision-making, number of proposed lots, environmental issues, boat traffic issues and others. 

Dr. Derek Coleman of Ages Consultants Limited, the planner/ecologist retained jointly by the Lake of Bays Association and Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation was the seventh member of the public to speak. He was introduced by Judith Mills, President of LBHF and Mary Ann Peden, Vice-President of LOBA. He spoke to the scale of proposed development not being supported by Provincial Policy Statements and the Township of Lake of Bays Official Plan. He had created images of the island as it is currently developed, developed with 36 lots, and developed (as an example) with 10 lots. His presentation was well received. Next Steps
LOBA and LBHF will continue to monitor the development proposal and keep our respective members informed. 

District, Township and Town staff will compile all of the comments that have been raised by the public and peer reviewers, and send them to the applicants. The applicants and their consultants will then review and provide a response to all of the comments received.  When staff receive that response, and any updated studies/reports, they will bring a recommendation report forward to their respective Councils. The timing for this is not known.

Around-the-Lake Swim
Stage 6: This Sunday June 10, 2018. 

Swimmers and kayakers will arrive in Baysville around 11:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Lake of Bays Brewing Co. will have a tent set up and are supporting the event. A tour and visit to the brewery will take place once all of the swimmers are in.

Come out and support Glenn and local charities on the lake.











The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) has launched an online boating-safety program targeting new boaters, particularly new Canadians, who may be experiencing recreational boating for the first time. STARTBoating is a comprehensive program designed to teach basic boating and water safety skills. The program consists of a series of online, interactive videos, which guide the user through the basic skills needed to safely enjoy a day on the water.  The program is suitable for all new boaters (and experienced boaters wanting to refresh their knowledge) and is available in English, French, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi and Tagalog.


LOBA will have CSBC Safe Boating Practices and Cold Water Awareness brochures available at our AGM on July 8.


The purpose of the Lake of Bays Association is to promote, sustain and enhance a clean and healthy natural environment, a well serviced community and a safe and peaceful Lake of Bays.
