On the Water

Boating on Lake of Bays
LOBA is introducing a new information piece about Boating on Lake of Bays with a focus on how we can all SHARE THE LAKE in a way that ensures everyone's safety and enjoyment. With a map on the back showing waterfront marinas with gas, public parks with water access and boat launches, and highlighting narrow waterways; this is a piece you will want to keep in your boat, review with new boaters and share with cottage renters (put a second copy in your cottage rental binder).

Be #WakeAware
The Federation of Ontario Cottagers' Associations in partnership with the Muskoka Lakes Association and Safe Quiet Lakes have produced a Be #WakeAware video.

Secchi disks are used to measure water clarity.
Water Quality Testing has Resumed
Water quality testing has resumed on the lake. Our Water Quality Manager, Kieran Molony, heads a team of dedicated volunteers who collect water samples at 21 sites from one end of the lake to the other. The first sampling day was July 3 and the next is August 2, bright and early in the morning. There are also several volunteers working under the Lake Partner Program, checking water clarity every month.

If you happen to see boats on the lake with people leaning over the edge as they scoop out water samples and check water clarity using Secchi disks please give them a wave to show you appreciate their work. It is thanks to all of them that we are able to monitor water quality for the whole lake.
What to do if you see a possible blue-green algal bloom
If you see a possible blue-green algal bloom, please report it as soon as possible by calling the Ontario Spills Action Centre at 1-866-663-8477. Following this please advise LOBA (info@loba.ca) of what you have seen and reported so that we can respond appropriately and as quickly as possible.

If you see a suspicious algal bloom the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) recommends that you take a cautious approach as some varieties of the algae can produce toxins harmful to both humans and animals. They recommend that you:
  • assume toxins are present;
  • avoid using, drinking, bathing or swimming in the water;
  • restrict pet and livestock access to the water.
