Township of Lake of Bays Public Meeting for
Langmaid’s Island Application
Cancelled

It has been a week of surprises and changes on the Langmaid’s Island development application and the Lake of Bays Association (LOBA) and Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation (LBHF) have been working hard to understand what is going on. Here is what we know and/or have been told.

On Tuesday November 13, Township of Lake of Bays released their staff report , recommending Council deny the current development proposal from Langmaid’s Island Corp (LIC). The next day, LIC filed a Local Planning Appeal Tribunal (LPAT) appeal on the basis that a decision had not been reached within the 180 days mandated by the Planning Act. (LPAT is the replacement for the Ontario Municipal Board). On advice from their lawyer, the Township cancelled the Public Meeting scheduled for Tuesday November 20. They also added a Closed Session to the agenda for councillors to speak with the Township lawyer and understand their next steps. At the beginning of the November 20 meeting, we understand that a motion will be made to remove the Langmaid’s Island proposal from the agenda and that motion is expected to pass. That means there will be no opportunity for the public to speak on the issue at this time.

Given that there will be no discussion in the open meeting pertaining to the Langmaid’s Island application, we do not feel that a strong public attendance is required . LOBA and the LBHF will have representatives attend to monitor the meeting and report if there are any unanticipated outcomes.

For those who were intending to submit their comments after November 13 for input to the public meeting, your letters will not be added to the meeting agenda for November 20, however, they will be read by the staff and councillors to whom they are addressed. We have been informed that in light of the appeal, councillors have been advised not to comment on this matter, but that they are still interested in hearing from constituents. We continue to encourage the public to remain engaged and to share their comments with their elected officials and Township staff as planned.

We will continue to monitor the application and keep you informed as the LPAT appeal process unfolds.
