Lake of Bays Association comments on the District of Muskoka Official Plan
The LOBA Planning & Development Committee reviewed the second draft of the Muskoka Official Plan (MOP) and has submitted comments to the District of Muskoka Planning and Economic Development Department. Overall, many of the changes in the MOP are positive and reflect current environmental, economic, cultural and development realities. However LOBA is concerned about the devolution of planning authority to the municipalities on policies that address issues confronting Muskoka as a region and where a District-wide planning strategy will conserve Muskoka's greatest asset - the natural environment. In this regard, LOBA supports a stronger District planning authority.
There will be a public meeting to discuss the proposed MOP policies on Thursday November 23, 2017, 9:00am, at the District of Muskoka offices, 70 Pine Street, Bracebridge. Allocation and Billing of OPP Police Services in the
District Municipality of Muskoka
In August of this year, the Lake of Bays Association sent a letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne and Minister Marie-France Lalonde of Community Safety and Correctional Services regarding the allocation and billing of OPP Police Services in the District of Muskoka. Lake of Bays residents pay approximately 50% more than the actual cost of the services provided, as calculated by the Province. LOBA believes this is not fair or appropriate. At that time we also encouraged our members to write to the Premier and Minister and provided a template letter.
The Mayors of the three Townships in Muskoka have been working with a consultant to resolve this issue at the Provincial level. To date, they have not been successful. To further their cause, they have created an on-line petition they hope MPP Norm Miller will introduce in the Legislature. If you would like to sign the petition, click here.

Upcoming Public Meeting Regarding Langmaids Island
The new owners of Langmaid's Island, Sean Majerovic and Cory Elmaleh, have retained MHBC Planning
to assist with their plan to develop the island. On October 24th they held a stakeholders workshop attended by Lake of Bays, Huntsville and District of Muskoka politicians and planning staff, various consultants, and representatives from the Lake of Bays Association, Lake of Bays Heritage Foundation and Muskoka Conservancy. The purpose of the workshop was to lead a discussion around: (i) an inventory of existing conditions and features; (ii) an identification of constraints to development, and, (iii) public and private objectives relating to the island.
At the time of the workshop, an environmental audit of the island had been completed by Riverstone Environmental Services, and a survey of the island was underway. The owners' stated intent is to develop a "long term plan for the island that respects the environment, appreciates community and realizes various aspirations." At this time there has been no application for development submitted by the owners.
The owners will be hosting a public information meeting on Saturday December 2, 2017, 10:00am-12:00pm, at the Baysville Seniors Centre, across the parking lot from the Baysville Library and Arena.
